1.   Scholarships are open to Malaysian citizens applying for post-graduate study at British institutions of higher education. Scholarships cover tuition fees, a return air fare to Britain, a monthly living allowance and a modest allowance to cover books, warm clothing & thesis. With the exception of business school programmes, where the fees element of the scholarship is capped at £12,000, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office will pay tuition fees directly to the institution concerned on behalf of successful applicants.  Scholarships are only given for studies of up to one year's duration.  They are not applicable for PhDs, undergraduate studies or professional courses (e.g. ACCA, RIBA, ICSA, Bar Vocational courses etc.).  Neither are the scholarships awarded for study outside the UK, distance learning and part-time study.

2.   Fields of study

We are looking for candidates in the following fields: climate change, sustainable development, rule of law, human rights, conflict prevention/resolution, foreign & security policy, good governance, counter-terrorism, migration issues, business and Islamic finance.

3.   Partnership Awards

Some scholarships are co-funded by private sector companies or UK institutions of higher education. All candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for Partnership Awards, after checking that the particular study area suits their needs. Candidates can still apply for other courses and universities, and will be automatically considered for both Partnership Awards and general scholarships under the main Chevening programme - no separate application is required.

Two awards for a Masters programme relating to banking and finance as well as environmental studies (climate change).

De La Rue

One award for a Masters programme relating to the banking and finance sector (including Islamic finance).

The Grimsby Institute

One award for MSc in Productivity and Innovation.

The University of Edinburgh

One award for either LLM International Law, MSc Economics, MSc International & European Politics, MSc Sustainable Energy Systems, MSc Environment & Development, MSc Environmental Protection & Management, MSc Environmental Sustainability, MSc E-science, MSc High Performance Computing or MSc Informatics.

Imperial College London

One award for any one-year taught Master’s programme offered by the College.

King’s College London

One award for any one-year taught Master’s programme offered by the College but with preference for areas of study in Health, Law, Social Science and Education.

Lancaster University

One award for MA in Conflict Resolution, MSc in Environmental Science, MSc in International Business (Economics), MA in Sociology (pathway in Globalisation) and MA in Society, Technology & Nature.

The London School of Economics and Political Science

One award for any one-year taught Master’s programme offered by the School.

Newcastle University

One award for any one-year taught postgraduate degree programmes of the University.

University of Westminster

One award for any one-year taught Master’s programme in the Centre for the Study of Democracy, Law School, Business School, School of Biosciences and Communications School.

4. Requirements

• Upper second class degree or higher

• Proof of professional achievements

• Working experience (preferably 2 years minimum)

• Fluent English (most UK Higher Education institutions require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 for admission into postgraduate courses)

Applicants with a Lower Second degree but with impressive career achievements may also apply. Most successful candidates are aged between 25 – 35.

Candidates are also expected to show a commitment to return to Malaysia, where they will contribute to the country’s socio-economic development using the new skills and knowledge acquired during their stay in the UK.

5. Application Procedure

We no longer accept paper applications.  All applications must be made on-line with the exception of government employees or employees of statutory bodies who should complete both the on-line application and a hard copy of the application (CHEV/1 form).  The CHEV/1 form, together with JPA(L)LDP/1A96 and JPA(L)LDP 1B/96, should be submitted through the:

Candidates applying through PSD should ensure that their forms reach PSD by 25 September 2009.

6. Applications to British Institutions of Higher Education

Candidates should do some research about higher education in the UK before applying.  They are welcome to visit the Education UK web-site.  It is expected that by the time of interview, candidates should have already made applications to the institutions of their choice.

7. Interviews

Short-listed candidates will be called for interview in January 2010. Interviews will only be held in Kuala Lumpur.  Applicants who are unavailable for interview at this time or at the nominated venue cannot normally be considered, nor can special interview arrangements be made for any applicant. No correspondence can be entered into as to why an applicant has not been short-listed.

 

8. Closing Dates

Applications should be submitted electronically and no later than 25 September 2009 for civil servants and 09 October 2009 for the general public. No applications will be accepted after these dates.
